Description

Description: Peppermint is one of the most useful essential oils (see Application below), and should be in every medicine cabinet. It was very difficult to find any peppermint essential oil that met our GEO Quality Standard (peppermint is often adulterated, and is difficult to grow correctly), until we found this particular one in France. Try it. It will delight and impress with its unique aroma and therapeutic benefit.

Cultivation: Certified USDA organic

Botanical Name: Mentha x piperita L.

Fragrance: “Highly penetrating, grassy-minty camphoraceous odour” (The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils. p. 175. Reprinted by permission of HarperCollins Publishers Ltd © (1995) (Lawless, Julia).

Part of Plant: Flowering herb

Origin: France

Extraction process: Steam distillation

Suggested Use: Use in a diffuser or dilute in a vegetable or massage oil. Essential Oil Safety, 2nd ed., says that maximum dermal use should be 5.4% (p. 387). This means that in one teaspoon (about 5 ml) of fractionated coconut oil or an equivalent vegetable oil, one should mix up to 8 drops of Organic Peppermint Essential Oil (p. 48. Reprinted by permission of author.).

Application: Peppermint has been “used...[for] indigestion, nausea, sore throat, diarrhea, headaches, toothaches and cramp. It is current in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for intestinal colic, flatulence, common cold, vomiting in pregnancy and dysmenorrhea” (The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils. p. 175. Reprinted by permission of HarperCollins Publishers Ltd © (1995) (Lawless, Julia). "Applied topically, immediately after an injury it reduces swellings, prevents bruises, and reduces pain" (Haas, Monika. Quick Reference Guide for 114 Important Essential Oils. p. 87).

Caution: Contraindicated for those with Cardiac fibrillation, G6PD deficiency, or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (oral). "Hazards: Choleretic; neurotoxicity; mucous membrane irritation (low risk). Do not apply to or near the face of infants or children" (ibid, Essential Oil Safety. p. 387. Reprinted by permission of author.). According to Robert Tisserand, peppermint use should be avoided altogether for children under 3 years of age (menthol can slow breathing). For children 3-6 years of age, peppermint can be diffused, and applied topically at 0.5%. If pregnant, suffering from any medical condition, or taking medication, consult a health care practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and away from eye area. Store in a cool, dark place.

Blends well with: Lavender, Wintergreen, Niaouli, Moroccan chamomile (Blue Tansy)
